"A committee is a life form with
six or more legs and no brain."

The calm before the storm...

...That's a nice way of saying that not much is happening this week. There
are a few pieces of news, but none of that exiting stuff we've all become used
to. Not that I'm surprised. This (along with the Yuletide season) is a slow
time of year. That, of course, allows me to use this space for whatever I
feel like (within reason and relatively good taste). First, the news:

/Links...

Thanks to Eric Carter for the news that the Relay 83504238@UWAVM is now known
as RELAY@UWAVM. UWAVM is University of Washington for those of you that want
to know that kind of thing.

In the future...

...there will be a CSNEWS Music Magazine. I am not going to include it in
the list until the first issue comes out, but here is the scoop on what it
is all about (from the file CSNEWS MAGS on the file server CSNEWS@MAINE):

+---------------------------------------------------------------------------+
³ Actually, CSNEWS can't take the credit for this project. It was the ³
³ brainchild of Michael Murphy, a MAINE system operator (not a member ³
³ of the CSNEWS staff). He will be taking submissions and be providing ³
³ you with any information you might need. His userid is MURPH@MAINE, ³
³ so just send him a mailfile if you are interested... ³
³ ³
³ This music magazine will deal with artist and recording reviews. I.e., ³
³ you can review tapes, records, CDs, etc., that you have, or performers ³
³ that you have seen or like. Also, concerts and musical events can be ³
³ reviewed. Send all submissions to MURPH@MAINE, and not CSNEWS. ³
³ ³
³ *************** A Note From The Editor *************** ³
³ ³
³ I'd like the focus of this virtual magazine to be on Compact Discs ³
³ and Compact Disc technology, but we'll still listen to you if you're ³
³ still playing LPs and Cassettes. ³
³ ³
³ Here's what I'd like as a general format for reviews. All of the ³
³ information concerning the Disc or LP should be able to be found on the ³
³ album where all credits are given. The performance and sound quality ³
³ scales are your opinions. ³
³ ³
³ ³
³ REVIEW FORMAT ³
³ ------ ------ ³
³ Title ³
³ Artist ³
³ Producer(s) ³
³ Engineer(s) ³
³ Label/Catalog # ³
³ Time ³
³ Song Titles ³
³ Performance scale (1-10) ³
³ Sound scale (1-10) ³
³ What format was reviewed (CD, LP, Cassette) ³
³ Release date (For older material transferred to CD) ³
³ SPARS code (Also for CDs - will explain below) ³
³ ³
³ ³
³ The SPARS code represents a standard proposed by the Society of ³
³ Professional Audio Recording Studios (SPARS). Many CDs have this three ³
³ letter code printed somewhere on their information booklets. The three ³
³ letters correspond to the type of recorder used for recording, mixing ³
³ and mastering of the disc (analog or digital). For example, a disc with ³
³ the code "ADD" would show that the disc was an analog recording, mixed ³
³ and mastered digitally. ³
³ ³
³ I plan on doing a few reviews for Rock/Pop/Jazz since I am familiar ³
³ with those types of music. I still need other reviews so that I can ³
³ make each issue of this virtual magazine worth sending out. ³
³ ³
³ I am not much of a Classical or Country music buff. I would like to ³
³ include those types of music reviews as well, but I do not feel qualified ³
³ to review those types of music and will be happy to take a look at any ³
³ Country or Classical reviews you want to send. ³
+---------------------------------------------------------------------------+

That is all for this week. Tune in next week when once again I attempt to
remain interesting when there is no news. Unless there is news. In which
case I don't have to worry.

                               Virtually;

                                    Chris
                                    (Fuzzyman)
                                    BITLIB@YALEVMX

COMING SOON: May 30, to be exact. It's the Bitlist Special First Anniversary
Issue (say that three time fast). It will include highlights of the past year
(including a look at which of my predictions turned out okay and which ones
bombed). I might even make some predictions for the next year if I feel lucky.
